Don Irvine
Managing Director
Don, our Managing Director and owner, brings over 35 years of extensive drilling experience across both domestic and international operations. Beginning his career in the Surat and Bowen Basins, Don went on to manage major projects for industry leaders such as Woodside and British Petroleum, overseeing operations in diverse and challenging environments worldwide. His depth of knowledge and strategic vision have been instrumental in shaping CQ Exploration’s reputation for excellence. Don is a strong advocate for a safety-first culture, actively promoting high standards of performance and compliance throughout the organization. By working closely with clients and fostering collaborative relationships, he ensures that every project is delivered safely, efficiently, and to the highest industry standards. Don’s leadership continues to drive innovation and operational success across all facets of CQ Exploration.
Karen Irvine
Director and Finance Administrator
Karen our Finance Director and co-owner is truly the rock of CQ Exploration, having been with the company since its inception and playing a pivotal role in building the foundations of our success. As the head of our Finance team, Karen works closely with clients and suppliers to ensure seamless financial operations and absolute accuracy in all matters. Her leadership has been instrumental in implementing robust financial systems that support efficiency and compliance across the business. Beyond her financial expertise, Karen takes an active role in promoting mental health and overall well-being for our employees and their families, reflecting her deep commitment to the people behind the business. Known for her exceptional attention to detail, reliability, and unwavering dedication, Karen is not only a trusted leader but a cornerstone of CQ Exploration’s culture and long-term success.
Darrin Melton
General Manager Operations
Darrin began his drilling career in 2004 at just 18 years old and has since accumulated two decades of hands-on experience across the Bowen, Surat, Galilee, and Clarence-Moreton basins. His extensive background spans a wide range of drill rigs and environmental conditions, giving him exceptional technical knowledge and adaptability. Darrin is highly regarded for his mastery of drilling techniques across diverse geological formations, always prioritizing safety and risk mitigation. As CQ Exploration’s General Manager, Darrin demonstrates strong leadership and strategic vision, ensuring operational excellence while fostering a culture of safety and compliance. His ability to manage complex projects, maintain client relationships, and drive team performance reflects his deep understanding of what it takes to deliver success. Committed to continuous improvement and high standards, Darrin’s leadership and expertise are central to CQ Exploration’s growth and reputation for excellence.
Taylah Murray
HR Manager
Taylah has been an integral part of the CQ Exploration team since April 2022, bringing outstanding interpersonal skills and a meticulous approach to every aspect of her role. Holding a Certificate IV in Human Resources Management, Taylah leads our Human Resource and Administration departments with professionalism and precision, overseeing critical functions such as recruitment, onboarding, travel logistics, and crew coordination. Her ability to connect with people and build strong relationships ensures a positive experience for both staff and stakeholders. Taylah is passionate about training and development, championing programs that support employees in achieving Nationally Accredited Certificates and advancing their careers. She actively researches and evaluates internal and external training services, providing strategic guidance to maintain compliance and align performance with industry standards. Known for her attention to detail and commitment to excellence, Taylah plays a vital role in shaping our workforce and driving CQ Exploration’s success.
Douglas Newton
Operations Manager
Doug is an accomplished Operations Manager whose exceptional work ethic and dedication have been instrumental in CQ Exploration’s success. With over 20 years of experience in the drilling industry across both coal and gas sectors—and 16 years as a valued member of CQ Exploration—Doug brings unmatched knowledge and practical expertise to every project. A qualified mechanic by trade, Doug also holds a Certificate IV in Drilling Operations and a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, showcasing his commitment to continuous learning and professional development. Doug goes beyond planning and logistics to oversee complete operational management, ensuring efficiency, safety, and compliance at every stage. Known for his hands-on approach and ability to mentor and develop future leaders, Doug actively identifies and nurtures the next generation of supervisors and drillers. His focus on client service, team performance, and operational excellence reflects a deep commitment to driving success for both CQ Exploration and its partners.
Simon Harris
HSE Manager
Simon began his career in the drilling industry in June 2011, gaining extensive experience through various field and management roles. His work with multiple clients across the Sydney, Bowen, Cooper, and Surat basins has equipped him with a diverse range of transferable skills and a strong understanding of operational excellence. Simon holds a Certificate III in Drilling Operations, a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, and a Certificate IV in Workplace Health and Safety, reflecting his commitment to professional development and safety leadership. As the manager of our HSSE teams, Simon is responsible for driving continuous improvement within CQ Exploration’s Environmental, Safety, Health, and Management Systems (ESHMS), while liaising with clients, team members, and stakeholders to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient operations. His proactive approach and dedication to high standards make him a key contributor to our success and safety culture.
Christian Prouchandy
Drilling Manager
Christian is driven by a relentless commitment to success in our drilling operations. With 13 years of experience throughout the mining sector, he combines technical expertise with a proactive approach to deliver projects that meet the highest standards of safety and compliance. Christian’s excellent attitude and strong leadership skills enable him to navigate complex challenges delivering safe and compliant results to ensure every project is executed seamlessly. Christian holds a Certificate IV in Drilling operations and a Certificate IV in Training and Assessor.
Raymond Cameron
Drilling Manager
With over 18 years in the industry Raymond, brings exceptional expertise in drilling operations across all disciplines. Raymond is highly regarded for his collaborative approach, working closely with our clients to understand their objectives and tailor solutions that deliver measurable success. Raymond consistently drives outcomes that exceed expectations, reinforcing our reputation for excellence in the region. He holds a Certificate IV in Drilling Operations.
Dale Phillips
HST Co-Ordinator
Dale brings over 25 years of experience across both the Mining and Oil & Gas sectors, specializing in training management and safety compliance. As the head of our Training Department, Dale excels in employee mentoring and career development, ensuring our workforce is equipped with the skills and knowledge to succeed. Affiliated with a reputable, accredited Training Organisation, his leadership and meticulous attention to detail guarantee that all personnel are trained to the highest industry standards. Dale’s responsibilities include overseeing competency-based training programs, managing compliance with regulatory requirements, and implementing continuous improvement initiatives to enhance workforce capability. Holding a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, a Certificate IV in Workplace Health and Safety, and a Diploma in Drilling Operations, Dale combines technical expertise with a passion for developing future leaders, reinforcing our commitment to safety, compliance, and operational excellence.
